November 2013 M&J Trimmings Project DIY Jewelry Box

novpdiy

I got an email from M&J Trimmings asking me to review one of their boxes so I had to say YES. I love DIY projects in general so when I got my box I did a little research on their website to see what others did so I came up with a few designs of my own. I’m so excited to show you guys what I made!

Here’s a little more about Project DIY… for $30 a month (less if you choose a longer subscription) you’ll receive a box of 2-3 designer jewelry pieces and a free starter kit. These pieces are suppose to be fashionable so the great thing about this subscription box is that you get to personalize your own pieces.

The theme for this month is Joan of Arc so there’s a lot of metals. Also, this box has a starter kit so if you order your first box- you’ll get one too.

Sorry for the lack of the packing pictures- when I uploaded my pictures they got corrupted so I had to retake my pictures again- what a pain! However the packaging was very packed well- there was a lot of boxes and bags to protect everything. I had a opening a christmas present experience.

Let’s jump right to the content of the box!

mjdiycanvaslayout

This is the starter kit which has random pieces for you to make earrings, necklaces, and little rings for whatever else you might need.

novdiyjumpring

I didn’t know what a jump ring was so I had to youtube it lol. It’s basically I ring with different sized slots in it to open up those tiny connecting rings. Very useful indeed. The best part of this kit are these three handy tools- Chain Nose Plier, Needle Nose Plier, and the Wire Cutter Plier all in a cute canvas bag. These pliers are pretty good quality so get your DIY on!

novdiynecklace mjback

The first jewelry piece is the Joan of Arc Shield Necklace. They have an example piece on the box but it’s totally up to you to customize it however you what. If you want to see a more detailed instruction visit guides.mjprojectdiy.com to see how they made it. You can also see other people’s design too!

mjnecklacelayout

novdiynecklacelayout
Inside the pillow box you’ll see the materials in plastic baggies and a quick intro. If you’re not to familiar with jewelry making I suggest visiting the website for more instructions. Read through everything first so you know what you’re getting into!

novdiycuff mjcufflayout novdiybraceletpiecesThe next piece I got was the Warrior Cuff. I actually tried this on and it wasn’t too big! I have very skinny wrists so it was a little bit wider (you can bend it to your size so do this before you decorate it).

You can cut up pieces and re-arrange it however you want.

The fake leather fabric is there to give it the medieval look- its very soft. I think it made the bracelet more comfortable to wear and to keep it in place on my wrist.

mjcuffbag

The bracelet didn’t fit in the pillow box so this was in it’s own velvet drawstring bag- how fancy!

So for the final result I wanted to use both materials from each of the pieces Project DIY gave me so I didn’t have to limit myself (although I didn’t use all the materials).

Here’s what I made!

novdiynecklace novdiybracelet

If you guys really like what I made I can do a quick tutorial and explanation- just like this post or comment. I had a lot of fun making these pieces even though it did take awhile- it was worth it!

Overall, I thought this box was pretty cool concept- if I can afford an extra $30 I would definitely order another box. So if you’re interested in subscribing visit their page.

Thank you Project DIY for introducing me to your box, I had lots of fun! Lemme know if you subscribed.

November Ipsy 2013 with Bonus Coupon Codes!

novipsybagholdThis month’s Ipsy bag is the best one yet because Michelle Phan is giving out full size make-up as a bonus product! You usually get 5 products but in this bag we got 6! They are always trying to top the last bag to keep us happy. =]

As a bonus Ipsy gives their subscribers a free bag with all your products. You can use promo codes to buy the products in the month’s bag when you check out the website- lucky for you… I did all the hard work and gathered them all up here!

The theme for this month is Glam It Up so there’s a lot of silver and gold or glitter this month.

novipsybag

novbbipsyswatchI actually don’t trust the hand/wrist swatching because when I actually do put it on my eyes or lips- the colors aren’t the same or they don’t glide the same on the hand (if you get what I mean). I swatched it for you anyways just to see the different colors clearly. You’ll see it on my face later in this post, don’t worry! =]

I know its light but starting from the top is the Pixi Bronzer in Subtly Sunkissed, next is the Be a Bombshell Lip Crayon in Shameless , em waterliner in amazing grey, and Starlooks Gem Eyeliner Pencil in Amethyst.

novipsyemThe bonus product I got is the em cosmetics’ Waterliner Intense Color Eyeliner- Amazing Grey. Retail: $20.00. This was a lot smaller than I imagined but it has a sponge smudging tool on one end to get a smokey look. This pencil is designed to stay on your waterline (right above the lower lashes). This wasn’t my favorite color to get but I can’t complain because I really wanted to try this product. When I tried this on my waterline it seems like nothing went on…maybe this one is meant for the eye lids. It’s kinda light for my eyes but if you want a subtle lower lid color- this would look nice.

novipsylashesnovipsylashbackKiss everEZlashes Lash Double Pack #03. Retail: $5.99. I love these! I’m not too sure about the glue but I think I have to use my Duo false lashes glue but I like the eyelash tool.

I definitely need to practice more but I like the idea of false lashes because my lashes are short and they don’t seem to hold the curl anymore. Ever since I used the treat/prime mascara- my lashes have gotten a little thicker but they don’t stay curled… strange. Overall these lashes make my eyes pop and it’s twice the length of my actual lashes so I really like that! You can see my complete look in the end. 😉 lashes

novipsypolishhold

Nailtini Straight Up Color Nail Lacquer- Caviar Cocktail. Retail: $13.00. Another grey nail polish to add to my collection! I haven’t tried this yet but I’m lovin’ the size… maybe I’ll do a grey nail design with all of my grey polishes and see if you guys can tell the difference. I was really hoping for the pink champagne color so if anyone wants to trade lemme know!

The other eyeliner I got is a very pretty shimmery purple- Ipsy really knows I love eye stuff!

novipsyslStarlooks Gem Eye Pencil-Amethyst. Retail: $14.00. As you can kind of see in the swatch above its either a shiny dark purple with out flash or a light shimmery purple with flash. I know it’s hard to see since there’s so much purple but its the one closest to my lashes.

purpleeyeliner

I really like how this glides over my eyes even over an eyeshadow so that’s awesome. The only down side is that it comes off a little when I go over my lash line with a black liquid liner. It’s a pretty unique color though so I’m really happy I got this color.

novipsybab

For my lip product I got the Be a Bombshell Lip Crayon in Shameless. Retail: $14.00. I’m so happy Ipsy chose a darker shade for me, I usually get bright red or an orangey red. The flash makes it look reddish but its really a deeper red. I put two (sloppy I know) coats but in my complete look I did one so that my eyes will stand out more.

novipsylipcolor

I would say this lip crayon is like a lipstick but in a fat pencil form. It glides nicely but it doesn’t stay on for long when I eat and drink so I have to re-apply frequently. Its moisturizing but my lips need more hydration during the cold seasons.

novipsybronzerFor the face, I got the Pixi Beauty Bronzer in Subtly Sunkissed. Retail:~$4.00. This isn’t a full sized product but this is the only one that isn’t full sized. I don’t use too much bronzer but I like using this all over for a brighter complexion. Also it has a shimmery effect to it so it can brighten my face up or highlight certain areas. It’s pretty close to my skin color as you can see in the swatch but I don’t have anything like this so I’m happy with Ipsy’s pick. I might re-order since I do like the natural finish- plus the full version comes with a kabuki brush (I’m obsessed with compact brushes for some reason) and we get a 25% discount. =]

Speaking of discounts… I thought it would be easier to see all the codes all at once instead individually so here it is:

em michelle cosmetics

Whew, that’s a long list. Now for the finally!

novipsylook

I already told you about the Ipsy products I used in this bag but I got to use the Style Sexy Hair Spray from my last bag. I didn’t do any extra curling- I just sprayed over my slightly wavy hair and scrunched it up to better hold it in place. My eyeshadow was from elf’s 100 eyeshadow palette (the only two dark purple shades they had) and added some light blue shimmer to darken up the “v” crease of my eyes. I used a q-tip with a bit of water to give it a hard clean line. I added some white eye shadow to the end of my lids closest to the nose to brighten them up. Then I used the They’re Real mascara on my top and bottom lashes. The blush is actually a bunch of reddish-purple and red eyeshadows. (I’m working on creating a make-up tip blog to show you have to up cycle unused make-up). I also used a highlighter on my brow bone, cupid’s bow, and the corner of my lips.

I hope you enjoyed my simple yet “glam” look for the holidays. If you want to join Ipsy’s subscription use my link. I believe it takes up to two months so sign up now-you can choose to cancel anytime so it doesn’t hurt to sign up! Trust me, you won’t be let down if you want to explore using make-up.

November Birchbox 2013

nocbbholdWoo! This is one took forever, it shipped out 11/8 and I just got it on 11/18… my boxes usually come a lot faster but it seems like it stays in one place for a long time.

If you don’t know what Birchbox is, you’re in luck! For $10 you get 4-5 deluxe samples (in some boxes full sizes products). You can customize what you want by altering your quiz and earn points for free products.

novbbcardfrontThis month’s theme is More Good. Each holiday is a treat- Birchbox usually releases a limited edition box (visit my Snow Day post for this month’s goodies).

Let’s see what came in the mail!

novbbbox

novbbchella 1. Chella Highlighter Pencil. Retail: $18.00. This awesome pencil does everything! It highlights, conceals and brightens your features. I already got one from Ipsy so I’m trying to trade to get something I want. I think everyone should have one of these pencils- its super versatile and its super creamy making it blendable.

novbbpc2. Paula’s Choice RESIST BHA 9 for Stubborn Imperfections. Retail: $4.00. (I got this one already in my “messed up” box). It looks like a perfume sample but it’s actually for your face. It’s a nightly serum for stubborn imperfections- it tackles acne scars, rosacea, wrinkles, blemishes, and so much more… I like that it has a lot of benefits- I just think using a tiny (smaller than a perfume sample size bottle) serum wouldn’t give me a chance to see if it’ll work. The sticker on the packing says that I can get another free sample but honestly- I don’t think its worth it. The full size bottle costs $40 for 3 oz (my sample was .03 oz) so even if it does work- that’s pretty pricey bottle!

novbbbee3. BeeKind Body Lotion with honey and organic chamomile extracts. Retail: $1.88. I’m not sure if I like the smell but its a really strong lime/lemon smell. For something that has honey and chamomile the lemony-acidic smell is really strong. This is a good size lotion for my hands for on the go. I like that everything is organic however it I don’t see it working too well for extra dry hands like I have.

novbbchoco4. Chuao Chocolatier Chocolate-honeycomb. Retail: $0.84. I love it! I just wished that they gave more than a dinky size sample. Honestly, this chocolate “bar” which is really a leaf shaped piece is pretty expensive for the size. I do appreciate all the different and unique flavors they have though like Potato Chip (kettle chips and sea salt in milk chocolate), Orange A Go Go (dark chocolate with candied orange and orange bergamot), Maple Bacon (crisp bacon with a dose of maple sweetness and smoked sea salt in milk chocolate), Salted Chocolate Crunch (toasted breadcrumbs with sea salt in dark chocolate), Pop Corn Pop (puffed whole grains and toasted corn chips with a hint of sea salt), Spicy Maya (a spicy blend of pasilla chile, cinnamon, and cayenne in dark chocolate), and Firecracker (chipotle caramel fudge dotted with popping candy and salt in dark chocolate).

novipsypolish5. Color Club® Cocktail Hour Collection-Dark N’ Stormy. Retail: $4.00. This is a sample size the full size is double the size. I have a ton of grey nail polish so this one didn’t impress me. Both Ipsy and Birchbox had the copper or silver color polish for this month and they BOTH gave me silver. Now I have 5 grey polishes- yippie. =P

5shadesofgrey2

As an addition, we got a catalogue of all of Birchbox’s goodies. You can browse via this mini magazine to see some of the holiday products and the price. You can always browse the online store and find free samples and other full size products along with your order!

novbbinvite     novbbinvitehold

Overall, this month’s box didn’t impress me like my other boxes. But it is definitely worth more than I paid for it. This box is worth $28.72, not bad but this is one of the least expensive box I’ve gotten.

As always, if you like Birchbox please use my link to sign-up! If you sign up, you’ll be automatically entered to win a Kate Spade Saturday bag worth $50! You can see/read more details in this post. Good luck!

November 2013 Birchbox vs. Ipsy Match-up

Okay, so I thought it would be a fun idea to match up this month’s box with two of the most competitive subscription boxes against each other- Birchbox and Ipsy. (It’s kinda unfair but Ipsy stepped-up their game this month.)  I thought it’d be fun to see how they compared to one another.

So let’s get to it!

1. Eyes

3605970514266_S1177900_WATERLINER_PDP_MAIN_HERO 500mi-hnrx5xzipvxzqn0  500mi-hnrzubuu25xh1wa chella_highlighterpencil_ivorylace_900x900

Ipsy this month focused a lot on my eyes! It’s awesome because I LOVE eye products. I really wanted the em cosmetics waterliner because I don’t have anything like it and even though I told Ipsy I didn’t want to get Starlooks again- I’m glad they didn’t listen because this a different eyeliner that’s not black. I bought a silver eyeliner from Sephora Collection so I’m so happy I got the purplish color-Amethyst. Also from Ipsy- I got false eyelashes which I kinda already ordered 20 pairs on ebay for less than $2! It hasn’t arrived yet so I’ll add these to my growing collection. I’m excited to try the tool out since the first time I put on false eyelashes- they weren’t exactly on close enough.

Finally, Birchbox gave me a Chella Highlighter which I already have thanks to Ipsy! It’s a great pencil but I might have to trade it for something I want more.

Props to Ipsy for knowing what I like (even though I already bought most of the stuff!)… Ipsy takes the win for the eye portion.

2. Lips

500mi-hnrvqohbuffmc2s chuao_bar_honeycomb_900x900_1_2

Ipsy gave me a Be a Bombshell Lip Crayon in Shameless. I couldn’t help but make my own berry-colored lip balm and but a ton of lipstick/lipgloss/tinted gloss from e.l.f. I really should stop shopping for make-up because I end up getting such great “samples” from Ipsy. I actually end up using the lip crayon from last time in my almost-gone lip balm and adding the blue mineral eye shadow with a super bright red lipstick to create my own berry lip balm. I think I like the berry colors more for fall/winter than red/pink.

As for Birchbox, my lips will be munching on delicious dark chocolate filled with Honeycomb bits! YUM.

I think Birchbox wins this round since I loveee dark chocolate and sweet things.

3. Face

500mi-hnrx2t11zhluoy2 beekind_bodylotion_900x900 paulaschoice_bha9_900x900

Ipsy picked out this lovely light “bronzer” but I think I’ll use it more as a highlighter than a bronzer. It’s shimmery and slightly lighter than my skin tone so this is something I’d want to use.

Birchbox knew I love skincare products and that’s something Ipsy doesn’t really give me. Since I  have extra dry skin this season, the BeeKind lotion helps me keep that under control. Even though I got the BHA 9 serum before I never used it because it was such a tiny bottle, now that I have two I’ll use it and see if it clears my pores, lines, and any blemishes.

I like both subscriptions’ focuses. Ipsy has affordable but full-size make-up products and Birch has expensive skincare samples with some affordable make-up as well.

Birchbox wins it in the face category.

4. nails

mi-hnrwr57tyqn4nan colorclub_fiestacollection_ontherocks_900x900

I love nail polishes- I have so many it’s kinda getting ridiculously heavy. lol

Ipsy and Birchbox gave me polishes for the fall- I love the glittery copper and silver colors for this season but honestly I already have these colors! I’m running low on the copper color-why couldn’t they both given that color. I love that color for all year round really but for some reason Ipsy and Birchbox gave me the same color I picked out from Avon, Julep, and Sephora. So now I have 5  grey nail polishes!

Since Ipsy has a bigger bottle, Ipsy wins this round.

It came out to be a tie! But since I received a 6th bonus product and a clutch bag, Ipsy really takes it all. Birchbox was a little disappointing this month but they always give it their all. They’re both great subscription boxes however and I’m happy to get the each month. They compliment each other in a way because I get what I need from both boxes. =]

——————————————-Extra bonus post!——————————————-

So this is kinda unfair for Ipsy because I haven’t gotten as many boxes as Birchbox but I wanted to compare categories but for all the products I’ve gotten so far!

1. Eye/shadow/liner/highlighter

octipsybella septipsynyx septipsychella  septipsystarlooks novipsysl  novipsyem  novipsylashes  augbbeyecream novbbchella

It’s no brainer that Ipsy will always beat Birchbox in this category… the only time Birchbox sent me an eye item is the eyecream and the highlighter in November’s box. Ipsy will always make-up for that but sending me an eye item in every bag.

2. Mascara

septipsymott sept2bbmascara

Even though both subscriptions sent me one mascara, I think Birchbox gave more of an advantage with the duo purpose wand.

3. Lips

500mi-hnrvqohbuffmc2s septipsypop augbblipstick julybblips sept2bbsugarbomb octbblips septbblipgloss

This is a tough one but Birchbox definitely stepped up on quality-wise. I get more of a variety from Birchbox and got two lip crayons from Ipsy. Maybe down the road I’ll get more lipstick or something from Ipsy.

4. Face

octipsycloth novipsybronzer augbblotion julybbbb julybbtan  julycoola octbbhchold octbbdermahold sept2bbsmart septbbpc   sept2bbegypt novbbbee

There’s no doubt that Birchbox wins the face category because they always give me great face serums and awesome customized products. Ipsy is a bit weary when it comes to picking something for my face because they tend to pick universal products.

5. Hair

octipsyspray septbbspray  julybbhair

Hmm… this is also a tough one… Ipsy will have to take this round because even though Birchbox gave a huge sample- it didn’t work too well with my hair if it stayed in there for too long.

6. Nails

octipsyzoya novipsypolishhold sept2bbruffian novipsypolish

It’s hard to choose between the two but Ipsy gives me the best size nail polishes so this is all Ipsy.

7. Tools

octipsybrush septbbwipes augbbstickers augbbwipes

I love brushes but Birchbox gives me more “tools” like fashion tapes, teeth wipes to feet wipes so Birchbox wins this time. I love Birchbox for innovations but the brush will last a lot longer than a single use wipes.

Birchbox wins overall! It can go either way with me but like I said both subscription boxes gives me what I need all together. If you want to sign up to get these awesome products for fraction of the cost use my links for a quick waitlist! Birchbox/Ipsy? Maybe both!

November Deals & Offers

Hey everyone! I haven’t been posting as much as I want to so I’ll just sum things up in this post. There’s a lot of things going on and the beginning of the month is pretty much the time where all the monthly subscriptions ship out their boxes…

Here’s what going on:

Birchbox– this month’s theme is Much Good which translate to “too much good” for the Thanksgiving month. Birchbox will be donating $25,000 to Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry! They also are launching a new line, Cynthia Rowley–  available on 11/7 for November’s limited edition Snow Day collection box valued at $57 but are selling it for $42 for Birchbox members. You’ll get a liquid eyeliner, eyeshadow palette and an exclusive make-up bag.

cynthiarowelybeauty_01_exclusivelaunchcollection_pricenew_900x900

Also in this month, you can get a Chella Highlighter Pencil, Beauty Protector Protect Shampoo/Conditioner, TOCCA Crema da Mano Luxe (hand cream), Tiassan Body Cream and many other products. Birchbox has 50+ boxes every month so these are only a few of the products you can receive. I’m hoping I don’t get another Chella Pencil but it’s always nice to have a spare (or to share the love). I’m expecting for them to ship out their boxes soon- I can’t wait!

I signed up for the yearly subscription since they had an awesome deal! For $99, I get two free boxes. The normal discount is one free box but they had a promo for two free boxes so I couldn’t pass it up. I’ve been happy with my Birchboxes so it was a great deal for me. =] Like I’ve been saying-sign up for emails so you can get great deals!

Ipsy– this is probably my most exciting bag I’m getting this month because in this month’s bag everyone will be getting 1 full size Michelle Phan’s em cosmetics! Not as one of the 5 products but as a 6th bonus product! WHATTT??!! It’s pretty awesome, Ipsy really tries their best to take everyone’s requests so this one will be a good one. I’m excited to try the waterliner! (Fingers crossed!)

If you really want to try em’s makeup line you can check out her site- she has deals every now and then so sign up for her emails! I found one promo code in one of her youtube videos- you can get $10 off of $30+ using SUBBIES10 it ends 11/21 so hurry! There’s a few promos out there right now so I’m assuming you can’t double up on codes. I think if you add a lipstick and a waterliner you can get a free sample life palette all for $27.50 (you might not need a code for this). Check it out here. An extra bonus is that you get free shipping and returns this month so you can’t beat that!

Glossybox– even though I’m not subscribed I still check them out in case they have awesome deals or products. This month subscribers will get Emite Makeup Micronized Eyeshadow in Damson Black. The hint suggests that subscribers will get a matte face primer and a hair product. Glossybox always had a perfume in their box so you can expect to get that. I’m waiting for a good deal on the boxes to sign up so maybe they’ll do it for Thanksgiving/Black Friday deal!

DownloadedFileSample Society– they sent me a bonus promo code for one free box! If you listened to my advice, you should’ve gotten one too! If you signed up for emails for boxes you want but aren’t committed to buy yet- they send you great deals. So Sample Society is giving first-time subscribers a FREE box! The code expires by the end of this month so I don’t know if the mini scented candle is luring me in for this month. I might have to take a chance for December’s box.

Julep– had a huge 50% sale the last few days but its over now (sorry!) BUT they are having another sale- you can get a Holiday Glam Kit for FREE when you spend $35+ use GLAMGIFT by 11/10. Its a free $70 value it so thats not too shabby!

Goodies Co.- has ended. I guess they had too many drop outs so they discontinued the program. Oh well.

Charming Charlie– finally has a website store! If you don’t have a store nearby you need to check out the site, they have such a great selection of accessories and I’m so excited they have it online. The store is AMAZING to be in- it’s a bit overwhelming but everything is so pretty and color-coordinated. You can earn points and get free stuff when you sign-up too.

Wantable– there’s a giveaway if you go to this link you can win a chance to get a Lois Vuitton bag filled with goodies! It ends 11/7 so hurry! You can get more points for sharing via facebook, twitter, or Pinterest. Good luck!
